What this course covers

Course 02 is the most legally significant course in the CleanOS Training programme. It covers the health and safety legislation that applies directly to cleaning operatives and produces the documented training records that employers need to demonstrate compliance with HSE requirements.

Completion of this course provides evidence that each named employee has received suitable and sufficient information, instruction, and training as required by Regulation 12 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH 2002) and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

Modules

Module 1: COSHH and hazardous substances

What COSHH means in a cleaning context. Covers the legal duty under Regulation 12 of COSHH 2002, how to read a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), understanding hazard classifications, safe storage of cleaning chemicals, and the consequences of non-compliance.

Module 2: PPE and personal protection

The requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 2022. Covers which PPE is required for which tasks, how to inspect and fit PPE correctly, what to do if PPE is damaged or missing, and the employer and employee obligations under the regulations.

Module 3: Manual handling

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Covers correct lifting technique, assessing load risk, team lifting, using mechanical aids, and how to report musculoskeletal concerns.

Module 4: Slips, trips, and falls

The leading cause of non-fatal workplace injuries in the cleaning sector. Covers wet floor signage requirements, footwear standards, cable management, stairway safety, and how to report and record near-misses.

Module 5: RIDDOR and incident reporting

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013. Covers which incidents must be reported to the HSE, how to complete an accident report, timeframes for reporting, and the employer’s legal obligations.

Module 6: Fire safety and emergency procedures

Covers fire prevention in cleaning environments, understanding fire safety signage, evacuation procedures, what to do if you discover a fire, and how to report fire hazards on client sites.

Module 7: Electrical safety and equipment

Safe use of cleaning equipment connected to the mains. Covers PAT testing requirements, visual inspection before use, what to do if equipment is damaged, and never using equipment you are not trained or authorised to operate.

Module 8: Stress, wellbeing, and reporting concerns

Workplace stress in the cleaning sector. Covers the right to raise concerns, how to report unsafe working conditions, the employer’s duty of care, and available support.

Who this course is for

Every cleaning operative who handles chemicals, operates cleaning equipment, or works on client premises. This is a mandatory course under UK health and safety law.
