What this course covers
Course 03 covers the practical foundation skills that determine whether your cleaning operatives deliver a consistent, professional service or an inconsistent one. These are the techniques that experienced cleaners develop over time — structured into a programme that new starters can complete before their first shift.
The goal is straightforward: every member of your team applies the same methods, uses equipment correctly, and avoids the mistakes that generate client complaints and re-cleans.
Modules
Module 1: Colour-coding and cross-contamination prevention
The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) colour-coding system. Covers why colour-coding exists, which colours apply to which areas, how cross-contamination causes hygiene failures, and how to handle equipment that has been used in the wrong area.
Module 2: Chemicals, dilution, and safe use
Reading product labels, following dilution instructions, and understanding what happens when chemicals are used incorrectly. Covers concentration ratios, mixing hazards, never decanting into unlabelled containers, and disposing of chemical waste correctly.
Module 3: Equipment handling and care
Correct use of the core equipment in a cleaning operative’s toolkit: vacuum cleaners, mops and buckets, spray bottles, microfibre cloths, and floor machines. Covers pre-use inspection, correct technique, and equipment storage.
Module 4: Surface types and appropriate methods
Different surfaces require different approaches. Covers hard floors (wood, tile, vinyl, stone), carpets and soft furnishings, glass, sanitary ware, stainless steel, and upholstery — including what not to use on each surface type.
Module 5: Cleaning sequence and method
Working systematically to achieve a consistent result. Covers high-to-low cleaning, working in a logical sequence through a room, time management on commercial sites, and the importance of checking your work before leaving a site.
